Methodology · Sources: country foreign trade reports, public sanctions summaries; distances: CEPII, Etalab 2.0 licence
  • A country's imports are the sum of supplies from all countries over the selected period, in US dollars. Each supply is taken from the exporting country's report, or from the importing country's report if the exporter did not report.
  • Russia is counted separately: from partner countries' reports, and exports to China from China's own report. The Russian share of each country's imports is counted the same way.
  • If neither the buying country nor the exporter reports, the column says “not visible”: there may be trade between them. For Russia these are Algeria, Iran, Bangladesh and a number of other countries.
  • Import growth compares the quarters since the start of the year with the same quarters a year earlier. It counts supplier and buyer pairs whose reporting is the same in both periods and where at least one country reported in full. If these pairs make up less than half of last year's imports, a dash is shown instead of a percentage. If their total last year was under $1m, the percentage is not coloured.
  • Price per tonne is the value of supplies with a stated weight divided by that weight. It is shown only for six-digit codes and only if weight is stated for at least half of the country's import value. The world average uses the same division over all countries.
  • Main suppliers are the three countries with the largest supplies over the period; the share is of the country's imports.
  • Restrictions are measures by the EU, UK, USA, Switzerland, Japan, Canada and Australia against imports from Russia, per public sanctions summaries. A measure often covers only some goods within a six-digit code, so check your ten-digit code separately.
  • Countries assign goods to six-digit codes differently: Egypt records most of its wheat imports under 100119. If the figures for a code are not what you expect, look at the four-digit heading.
  • Buyers in our catalogue are companies from this country in our counterparty catalogue that import goods of the same heading (first four digits of the code).
  • “Unfriendly” follows the list in Russian Government Order No. 430-r. Distance is between capitals.
