Halides and halide oxides of non-metals: chlorides and chloride oxides: phosphorus pentachloride

Names come in English where the EU Combined Nomenclature publishes them — chapters, headings and subheadings, whose first six digits are the same Harmonized System; deeper EAEU detail is a machine translation, marked as such. Official texts — tariff notes, measures, lists and classification rulings — are the original: customs and your broker go by that wording. Where we show a machine translation of them, it is marked; where our quality check rejected one, the Russian stays.

(A) CHLORIDES OF NON-METALS The most important of these binary compounds are: (1) Iodine chlorides: (a) iodine chloride (ICl) is obtained by the direct action of chlorine on iodine. Above 27 °C it is a dark brown liquid; at lower temperatures it takes the form of reddish crystals. Specific gravity about 3.0. It is decomposed by water; it causes severe burns to the skin. Used in organic synthesis as an iodinating agent; (b) iodine trichloride (ICl3). Obtained in the same way as iodine chloride, or from hydriodic acid. It is in the form of yellow needle-shaped crystals, soluble in water. Specific gravity about 3.0. Used for the same purposes as iodine chloride, and also in medicine. (2) Sulphur chlorides: (a) sulphur monochloride (S2Cl2) (also called "disulphur dichloride", the name being based on the structural formula Cl-S-S-Cl). Obtained by the action of chlorine on sulphur. This is the commercial sulphur chloride; it is a yellow or reddish liquid which gives off fumes with a suffocating odour in air; it is decomposed by water. Specific gravity about 1.7. As a solvent for sulphur, it is used for the cold vulcanisation of rubber or gutta-percha. (b) sulphur dichloride (SCl2). Obtained from sulphur monochloride. It is a reddish-brown liquid; it is also decomposed by water; it is a rather unstable compound. Specific gravity about 1.6. Used for the cold vulcanisation of rubber and as a chlorinating agent in the manufacture of synthetic dyes (in particular, thioindigo). (3) Phosphorus chlorides: (a) phosphorus trichloride (PCl3). Obtained by the direct action of chlorine on phosphorus. It is a colourless liquid, specific gravity about 1.6, corrosive, with an irritating odour, and lachrymatory. In moist air it "fumes", and it is decomposed by water. Used mainly as a chlorinating agent in organic synthesis (e.g., manufacture of acid chlorides, dyes, etc.), and also in the ceramics industry for obtaining a lustrous surface; (b) phosphorus pentachloride (PCl5). Obtained from phosphorus trichloride as white or yellowish crystals. Specific gravity about 3.6. Like phosphorus trichloride, it "fumes" in moist air, is decomposed by water and is lachrymatory. Used in organic chemistry as a chlorinating agent or catalyst (e.g., in the preparation of isatin chloride). Phosphonium chloride (PH4Cl) is excluded (heading 2853). (4) Arsenic chlorides. Arsenic trichloride (AsCl3). Obtained by the action of chlorine on arsenic or of hydrochloric acid on arsenic trioxide. It is a colourless oily liquid. It "fumes" in moist air; very toxic. (5) Silicon chlorides. Silicon tetrachloride (SiCl4). Obtained by the action of chlorine gas on a mixture of silicon dioxide and carbon, or on silicon itself, silicon bronze or ferrosilicon. A colourless

liquid, the specific gravity is about 1.5. In the presence of atmospheric moisture, it emits suffocating white vapors (hydrogen chloride (HCl)). It decomposes in water with the formation of gelatinous silica and the release of HCl vapors. It is used to obtain silica, high-purity silicon, organosilicon compounds and smoke screens. Hydrogen silicide substitution products such as trichlorosylane (SiHCl 3) are not included in this heading (heading 2853). This heading does not include carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), hexachloroethane (carbon hexachloride) (C2Cl6), hexachlorobenzene (ISO) (C6Cl6), octachloronaphthalene (C10Cl8) and similar carbon chlorides; they are chlorinated hydrocarbon derivatives (heading 2903).

These triple compounds include, inter alia: (1) Sulfur chloride oxide: (a) thionyl chloride (sulphur dichloride, sulfur chloride) (SOCl 2). Receive oxidation of sulfur dichloride or sulfur trioxide, or sulfuryl chloride. Colorless liquid, specific gravity about 1.7. It emits suffocating fumes, decomposes under the influence of water. It is used in the production of organic chlorides. (b) sulfur dioxide dichloride (sulfonyl chloride, sulfuryl l chloride) (“dichlorosulfonic acid”) (SO 2Cl2). Produced by the action of chlorine on sulfur dioxide or in sunlight, or in the presence of a catalyst (camphorus or activated carbon). Colorless liquid, specific gravity about 1.7. "Smoke" in the air; decomposes under the action of water, causes corrosion. It is used as a chlorinating and sulfonating agent in organic synthesis, for example, in the production of acid chloride. This heading excludes chlorosulfonic acid (“chlorohydrin sulfon it”) (ClSO 2·OH) (heading 2806). (2) Selenium oxide dichloride. Selenium dichloride oxide, commonly called selenyl chloride (SeOCl 2), is similar to thionyl chloride. It turns out when the action of selenium tetrachloride on selenium dioxide. At temperatures above 10 °C, it is a yellow liquid that smokes in the air; at lower temperatures it forms colorless crystals; the relative density is about 2.4. Decomposes with water. It is used in organic synthesis or to decarbonize the cylinders of internal combustion engines. (3) Nitrosyl chloride (nitrogen oxide) (NOCl). Orange-yellow gas with a suffocating odor, toxic, is used as an oxidizer. (4) Phosphorus oxychloride (phosphorus trichloride oxide, phosphoryl chloride) (POCl3). It is obtained from phosphorus trichloride when interacting with potassium chlorate, from phosphorus pentachloride when interacting with boric acid or the action of carbonyl chloride on tricalcium phosphate. A colorless liquid. The specific gravity is about 1.7. It has an irritating smell, "smokes" in moist air, decomposes with water. It is used as a chlorinating agent in organic synthesis, as well as in the production of acetic anhydride or chlorosulfonic acid. (5) Carbonyl dichloride (phosgene, carbon chloride, carbonyl chloride) (COCl2).

Obtained by the action of chlorine on carbon monoxide in the presence of animal black or charcoal, or by the action of oleum on carbon tetrachloride. A colourless product, liquid up to 8 °C and gaseous above that temperature; it is stored in liquid form or under pressure in heavy steel containers. When dissolved in toluene or benzene, it falls in heading 3824. A lachrymatory and very toxic substance. As a chlorinating agent it is widely used in organic synthesis (e.g., in the manufacture of acid chlorides, amino derivatives, Michler's ketone and intermediates for organic dyes). (C) OTHER HALIDES AND HALIDE OXIDES OF NON-METALS This group covers all other halides of non-metals (fluorides, bromides, iodides). (1) Fluorides: (a) iodine pentafluoride (IF5), a fuming liquid; (b) phosphorus fluorides and silicon fluorides; (c) boron trifluoride (BF3). Obtained by heating natural calcium fluoride and powdered boron oxide in the presence of sulphuric acid. A colourless gas. It "fumes" in moist air; it chars organic substances. It absorbs water strongly, forming fluoroboric acid. Used as a dehydrating agent and as a catalyst in organic synthesis. It forms adducts with organic substances (e.g., with diethyl ether, acetic acid or phenol); these compounds, which are also used as catalysts, fall in heading 2942.
