Aldehydes, whether or not with other oxygen function; cyclic polymers of aldehydes; paraformaldehyde: acyclic aldehydes without other oxygen function: methanal (formaldehyde)

Names come in English where the EU Combined Nomenclature publishes them — chapters, headings and subheadings, whose first six digits are the same Harmonized System; deeper EAEU detail is a machine translation, marked as such. Official texts — tariff notes, measures, lists and classification rulings — are the original: customs and your broker go by that wording. Where we show a machine translation of them, it is marked; where our quality check rejected one, the Russian stays.

These compounds are formed during the oxidation of primary alcohols; they contain a characteristic group:

Compounds are usually colorless liquids with a strong sharp - C O H

38 smell; many aromatic aldehydes are easily oxidized in air, turning into acids. The term "aldehydes with another oxygen-containing functional group" means aldehydes that also contain one or more oxygen-containing functional groups that have been mentioned in previous subgroups (alcohol, phenolic, simple etheric, etc. functional groups). (A) Aldehydes (I) Saturated acyclic aldehydes. (1) Methane (formaldehyde) (H·CHO). It is obtained by catalytic oxidation of methanol. Colorless gas with a pungent smell, well soluble in water. Its aqueous solutions with a concentration of about 40%, known as formalin or formol, are colorless liquids with a pungent and suffocating odor. These solutions may contain methanol as a stabilizer. Methane has many applications: in organic synthesis (dyes, explosives, pharmaceuticals, synthetic tannins, plastics, etc.), as an antiseptic, deodorant and reducing agent. (2) Ethanal (acetaldehyde) (CH3·CHO). Received by oxidation of ethanol or from acetylene. Moving colorless liquid with a sharp, fruity smell; caustic; very volatile, flammable; mixed with water, alcohol and simple ether. It is used in organic synthesis to produce plastics, varnishes or in medicine as an antiseptic. (3) Butanal (oil aldehyde, normal isomer) (CH 3·CH2·CH2·CHO). A colorless liquid mixed with water, alcohol and simple ether; used to produce plastics, perfumes and rubber vulcanization accelerators. (4) Heptanal (heptyl aldehyde, enante aldehyde) (CH 3·(CH2)5·CHO). Received by distillation of castor oil; colorless liquid with a pungent smell. (5) Octanal (caprylic aldehyde) (C 8H16O); nonanal (pelargonaldehyde) (C 9H18O); decanal (caprine aldehyde) (C 10H20O); undecanal (undecyl aldehyde) (C11H22O); dodecanal (lauric aldehyde) (C 12H24O), etc. These compounds are used as raw materials in the perfume industry. (II) Unsaturated acyclic aldehydes. (1) Propenal (acrylic aldehyde, acraldehyde, acrolein) (CH 2=CH·CHO). Formed by burning fats; liquid with a characteristic bitter and irritating smell; used in organic synthesis. (2) 2-Butenal (crotone aldehyde) (CH 3·CH=CH·CHO). Contained in the products of the first distillation of raw alcohol; colorless liquid with a pungent smell. (3) Citral. A liquid with a pleasant smell is found in the essential oil of mandarin, citron, lemons and especially in lemongrass oil. (4) Citronellaldehyde. Contained in citron fruit oil. (III) Cycloalkane, cycloalkene and cycloterpene aldehydes. (1) Fellandral or tetrahydrocuminaldehyde. Contained in fennel and eucalyptus oils.

39 (2) Cyclocytrals A and B. Obtained from citral. (3) Peryl aldehyde. Contained in essential oils Perilla mankinensis. (4) Safranal. (IV) Aromatic aldehydes. (1) Benzaldehyde (C6H5·CHO). Strongly refractive colorless liquid with the characteristic smell of bitter almonds; used in organic synthesis, medicine, etc. (2) Cinnamon aldehyde (C6H5·CH=CH·CHO). Oily yellowish liquid with a strong smell of cinnamon; used in perfumes. (3) α-amylcoric aldehyde. (4) 3-p-Kumenyl-2-methylpropionaldehyde. (5) Phenylacetaldehyde (C6H5·CH2·CHO). Liquid with a pronounced smell of hyacinths; used in perfumery. (b) Aldehydospyrts, aldehydospirts, aldehydophenols and aldehydes containing other oxygen-containing function aldehyde groups are compounds containing both an aldehyde functional group and an alcohol functional group. Aldehydes of esters are simple esters that also contain an aldehyde group (-CHO). Aldehydophenols are compounds that contain both a phenolic hydroxyl group (C6H5.OH) and an aldehyde group (-CHO). The most important aldehyde alcohols, aldehydophenols and aldehydes of esters are: (1) Aldol (CH3.CH(OH).CH2.CHO). It is obtained by aldol condensation of icehyde acet; a colorless liquid, which in a calm state is polymerized into a crystalline mass (paraldol). It is used in organic synthesis, for the production of plastics, during the flotation of ores. (2) Hydroxycitronellaldehyde (C10H20O2). Colorless slightly syrupy liquid with a pronounced smell of lily; used as a fixator in perfumery. (3) Glycolaldehyde (CH2(OH.CHO). It crystallizes, forming colorless crystals. (4) Vanillin (4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde). Methyl ether 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (protocatheldehyde); contained in vanilla. Shiny needle crystals or crystalline white powder. (5) Ethylvanyline (3-ethoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde). Thin white crystals. (6) Salicylaldehyde (o-hydroxybenzaldehyde) (HO.C6H4.CHO). Colorless oily liquid with the characteristic smell of bitter almonds; used in the production of synthetic perfumes. (7) 3,4-Dihydroxybenzaldehyde (protocatheldehyde) ((HO) 2.C6H3.CHO). Brilliant colorless crystals.

40 (8) Anise aldehyde (CH3O.C6H4.CHO) (methoxybenzaldehyde). Contained in anise and fennel oils; colorless liquid. It is used in perfumery called "hawthorn essence" (obepin). (B) Cyclical polymers of aldehydes (1) Trioxane (trioxymethylene). A solid polymer of formaldehyde; a white crystalline substance soluble in water, alcohol or ether. (2) Paraldehyde. ethanal polymer; a colorless liquid with a pleasant smell similar to the smell of ether, easily flammable. Used in organic synthesis, as a hypnotic and disinfectant in medicine, etc. (3) Metaldehyde. Also ethanal polymer; crystalline white powder, insoluble in water. This heading covers only metaldehyde in the form of crystals or powders. This heading does not include metaldehyde supplied in forms intended to be used as fuel (e.g. in tablets, sticks or similar forms) (heading 3606) (see note 2(a) to Chapter 36). This polymer (HO·(CH2O)n·H) is prepared by evaporating aqueous solutions of formaldehyde. A solid white scaly or powdered substance with a pronounced formaldehyde odor. It is used to produce plastics, waterproof adhesives and pharmaceuticals, as well as as a disinfectant and preservative agent. This heading does not cover aldehydobisulfite compounds which are regarded as sulfonated derivatives of alcohols (headings 2905 to 2911).
