8109 — Zirconium and articles thereof, n.e.s.; zirconium waste and scrap (excl. ash and residues containing zirconium)
Zirconium and articles thereof, n.e.s.; zirconium waste and scrap (excl. ash and residues containing zirconium)
Names come in English where the EU Combined Nomenclature publishes them — chapters, headings and subheadings, whose first six digits are the same Harmonized System; deeper EAEU detail is a machine translation, marked as such. Official texts — tariff notes, measures, lists and classification rulings — are the original: customs and your broker go by that wording. Where we show a machine translation of them, it is marked; where our quality check rejected one, the Russian stays.

Explanatory notes to heading 8109 2 paragraphs
Machine translation from Russian. The original is the EEC explanatory note, and that is what a classification dispute is argued from; the translation is for understanding and has no legal force.

Zirconium is obtained from silicate ore, zircon, reduction of oxide, chloride, etc. or electrolysis. It is a silver-gray metal, malleable and viscous. It is used in lamps of photoflares, for the production of gas absorbers or absorbents in the manufacture of radio lamps, etc. Ferrozirconium (Group 72) is used in the production of steel; the metal is also alloyed with nickel, etc. Zirconium, pure or alloyed with tin (“circallus”), is also used in the manufacture of shells for radioactive fuel and metal structures in nuclear power plants. Zirconium-plutonium alloys and zirconium-uranium alloys are used as nuclear fuel. For nuclear purposes, zirconium must be cleared of traces of hafnium.
