8111 Manganese and articles thereof, including waste and scrap
Manganese is obtained by reducing ore oxides containing minerals such as pyrolusite, brownite and manganite. It is also obtained by electrolysis.
It is a gray-pink metal, hard and brittle, as such, rarely used. It is, however, part of mirror cast iron, ferromanganese, silicomanganese, and some cast iron and alloy steels; these products are generally classified in Chapter 72, but ferromanganese and silicomanganese may sometimes be included in this heading if the iron content is too low (see note 1(c) to Chapter 72). Manganese is also doped with copper, nickel, aluminum, etc.
