Ambergris, castoreum, civet and musk; cantharides; bile, whether or not dried; glands and other animal products used in the preparation of pharmaceutical products, fresh, chilled, frozen or otherwise provisionally preserved

Names come in English where the EU Combined Nomenclature publishes them — chapters, headings and subheadings, whose first six digits are the same Harmonized System; deeper EAEU detail is a machine translation, marked as such. Official texts — tariff notes, measures, lists and classification rulings — are the original: customs and your broker go by that wording. Where we show a machine translation of them, it is marked; where our quality check rejected one, the Russian stays.

Machine translation. The original is the Russian text of the EAEU tariff, and customs goes by it; this translation is for understanding only and has no legal force.

Machine translation from Russian. The original is the EEC explanatory note, and that is what a classification dispute is argued from; the translation is for understanding and has no legal force.

0510 Ambra gray, beaver, civet and musk stream; scabs; bile, including dry; glands and other animal products used in the manufacture of pharmaceutical products, fresh, chilled, ice cream or otherwise processed for short-term storage

Ambergris is a substance secreted by the sperm whale, in the form of rounded masses composed of concentric layers, weighing up to several hundred kilograms. It has a waxy consistency and gives off a pleasant odour when rubbed. Its colour ranges from ash-grey to black, and its density is lower than that of water. Ambergris should not be confused with yellow amber (succinite), which is a mineral resin and falls in heading 2530. Castoreum is a resinous substance, brown, reddish or yellowish in colour, with a bitter taste and an acrid odour. It is secreted by beavers and is found in the skin glands (usually paired) in which it is produced. These are skin pouches 5 – 10 cm long. Civet is produced by the civet cat, or African civet, an animal of the cat family; it is a resinous substance, brown with a golden tinge or plain brown, of pasty and oily consistency, with a strong odour closely resembling that of natural musk. Musk, secreted by a member of the deer family, the musk deer, is usually found in the skin glands (flat and hairless on one side and convex with whitish hair on the other) in which it is produced. It is dark brown in colour and has a pungent

55 smells. This musk is not to be confused with artificial musk (xylene, ambrett, etc.) included in Chapter 29. Spanks are beetles that are used mainly as a skin-exciting or anti-irritant. Usually presented in dried or powdered form. This heading also covers (1) glands and other products of animal origin used in the manufacture of organotherapeutic products and unsuitable in nature or in the manner in which they are packaged for consumption (pancreas, testes, ovaries, gallbladders, thyroid gland, pituitary gland, etc.), fresh, chilled or ice creamed or otherwise processed for short-term storage to protect against spoilage during transport or storage (for example, in glycerol, acetone or alcohol). In dried or extracted form, these products are not included (heading 3001). (See, however, note 1 (a) to this groat of food.) (2) Bile, including dry bile extract not included, heading 3001. This heading also excludes snake or bee venom packed in dried flakes in soldered vials (heading 3001).
