1212 29 — Seaweeds and other algae, fresh, chilled, frozen or dried, whether or not ground, unfit for human consumption
Seaweeds and other algae, fresh, chilled, frozen or dried, whether or not ground, unfit for human consumption
Names come in English where the EU Combined Nomenclature publishes them — chapters, headings and subheadings, whose first six digits are the same Harmonized System; deeper EAEU detail is a machine translation, marked as such. Official texts — tariff notes, measures, lists and classification rulings — are the original: customs and your broker go by that wording. Where we show a machine translation of them, it is marked; where our quality check rejected one, the Russian stays.

1212 Locust beans, seaweeds and other algae, sugar beet and sugar cane, fresh, chilled, frozen or dried, whether or not ground; fruit stones and kernels and other vegetable products (including unroasted chicory roots of the variety Cichorium intybus sativum) of a kind used primarily for human consumption, not elsewhere specified or included: – Seaweeds and other algae: 1212 21 – – Fit for human consumption 1212 29 – – Other – Other: 1212 91 – – Sugar beet
1212 92 – Carob fruit (ceratonium) 1212 93 – sugar cane 1212 94 – chicory roots 1212 99 – other (A) seaweed and other algae. This heading covers all seaweed and other algae, suitable or unfit for human consumption. They can be fresh, chilled, frozen, dried or crushed. Seaweed and other algae are used for various purposes (for example, in pharmaceutical products, cosmetics, for food, for animal feed, as fertilizer). This heading also includes flour from seaweed and flour from other algae, consisting or not consisting of a mixture of many different types of seaweed and other algae. This heading does not cover: (a) agar-agar and carrageenan (heading 1302); (b) dead single-celled algae (heading 2102); (c) cultures of microorganisms of heading 3002; (d) fertilizers of heading 3101 or 3105. (B) Sugar beets and sugar cane. This heading also includes sugar beets and sugar cane as indicated in the heading. This heading does not include bagasse, the fibrous part of sugar cane remaining after extraction of the juice (heading 2303). (C) Carob fruit. Locust (or carob tree) (Ceratonia siliqua) is a small evergreen tree plant that grows in the Mediterranean region. The fruits of the carob tree, which are also called Tsaregrad pods, Tsaregrad horns or sweet horns, are brown beans containing many seeds, and are used mainly as a material for distillation or for livestock feed. Carob fruits are rich in sugar and are sometimes used as sweets. This heading covers endosperm, germs, whole seeds, and powdered germs, whether or not mixed with powdered seeds. This heading does not include flour from endosperm of carob seeds classified in heading 1302 as a glue or thickener of plant origin. (D) The seeds of fruit and their kernels, other products of plant origin (including unroasted chicory roots of the variety Cichorium intybus sativum), used mainly for food purposes, not elsewhere specified or included. This category of products includes seeds of fruit and their kernels and other products of plant origin, used mainly, directly or indirectly, for human consumption, but elsewhere in the Nomenclature not specified or included.
This heading therefore covers kernels of peaches (including nectarines), apricots and plums (used mainly as substitutes for almonds). These products remain classified in this heading even if they may be used for the extraction of oil. Unroasted chicory roots of the variety Cichorium intybus sativum are also classified in this heading, fresh or dried, whole or cut. Roasted chicory roots of this variety, used as coffee substitutes, are excluded (heading 2101). Other unroasted chicory roots fall in heading 0601. Stems of angelica, or garden angelica, used for making candied angelica or confectionery from it, are also classified in this heading. They are usually preserved in brine for short-term storage. The heading also covers sweet sorghum, such as saccharatum, used mainly for the production of syrup or molasses. The heading excludes fruit stones and seeds of a kind used for carving (e.g., date stones) (heading 1404), and roasted fruit kernels (generally classified as coffee substitutes in heading 2101).
