Hydrides and nitrides, whether or not chemically defined (excl. compounds which are also carbides of heading 2849, and inorganic or organic compounds of mercury)

Names come in English where the EU Combined Nomenclature publishes them — chapters, headings and subheadings, whose first six digits are the same Harmonized System; deeper EAEU detail is a machine translation, marked as such. Official texts — tariff notes, measures, lists and classification rulings — are the original: customs and your broker go by that wording. Where we show a machine translation of them, it is marked; where our quality check rejected one, the Russian stays.

Duty rate

Explanatory notes to heading 2850 3 paragraphs

Machine translation from Russian. The original is the EEC explanatory note, and that is what a classification dispute is argued from; the translation is for understanding and has no legal force.

2850 Hydrids, nitrides, azides, silicides and borides, of definite or indefinite chemical composition, except for compounds of heading 2849

Four groups of compounds are classified in this heading, each compound containing two or more elements, one of which is hydrogen, nitrogen, silicon or boron, and the others are metals or nonmetals. The most important hydride is calcium hydride (CaH2) (hydrolite), obtained by the direct interaction of its elements; white mass with crystalline fracture, which decomposes in cold when in contact with water with the release of hydrogen. It is a reducing agent used to produce sintered chromium from chromium chloride. There are also hydrides of arsenic, silicon, boron (including sodium borohydride), lithium (and lithium aluminum), sodium, potassium, strontium, antimony, nickel, titanium, zirconium, tin, lead, etc. This heading does not include compounds of hydrogen with the following elements: oxygen (headings 2201, 2845, 2847 and 2853), nitrogen (headings 2811, 2814 and 2825), phosphorus (heading 28 53), carbon (heading 2901) and certain other non-metals (headings 2806 and 2811). Hydrids of palladium and other precious metals are classified in heading 2843. (B) Nitrides (1) Nonmetal nitrides. Boron nitride (BN) is a light white powder, very refractory. Heat and electrical insulation material; used for lining electric furnaces or for the production of crucibles. Silicon nitride (Si3N4) is a gray-white powder. (2) Metal nitrides. Aluminum, titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, tantalum or niobium nitrides are obtained either by heating the number of that metal in a nitrogen atmosphere at a temperature of about 1100 °C or 1200 °C, or by heating at a higher temperature a mixture of metal oxide and carbon in a nitrogen or ammonia current. This heading does not include nitrogen compounds with the following elements: oxygen (heading 2811), halogens (heading 2812), sulphur (heading 2813), hydrogen (heading 2814), carbon (heading 2853). The nitrides of silver and other precious metals are classified in heading 2843, the nitrides of thorium and uranium in heading 2844.

(C) AZIDES Metal azides may be regarded as salts of hydrazoic acid (HN3). (1) Sodium azide (NaN3). Obtained by the action of dinitrogen oxide on sodium amide or from hydrazine, ethyl nitrite and sodium hydroxide; colourless crystalline flakes. Soluble in water, it deteriorates slightly in a moist atmosphere. It is strongly affected by the carbon dioxide in the air. Sensitive to impact, like mercury fulminate, but less sensitive to heat than mercury fulminate. Used for preparing initiating explosives for detonators. (2) Lead azide (PbN6). Obtained from sodium azide and lead acetate. A white crystalline powder, very sensitive to impact, which should be stored under water. Used instead of mercury fulminate as an explosive. (D) SILICIDES (1) Calcium silicide. A very hard, grey crystalline mass. Used in metallurgy, for producing hydrogen on site, and in the manufacture of smoke generators. (2) Chromium silicides. There are several chromium silicides; these are very hard substances used as abrasives. (3) Copper silicide (other than the copper-silicon master alloys of heading 7405). Usually in brittle plates. A reducing agent for refining copper, facilitating its melting and increasing its hardness and resistance to fracture; it reduces the susceptibility of copper alloys to corrosion. Also used in the manufacture of silicon bronze or copper-nickel alloys. (4) Magnesium or manganese silicides. The heading excludes compounds of silicon with the following elements: oxygen (heading 28 11), halogens (heading 28 12), sulphur (heading 28 13), phosphorus (heading 2853). Carbon silicide (silicon carbide) falls in heading 2849, silicides of platinum and of other precious metals in heading 28 43, ferro-alloys and copper-based master alloys containing silicon in heading 72 02 or 7405, and silicon-aluminium alloys in Chapter 76. For compounds of silicon and hydrogen, see Part (A) above. (E) BORIDES (1) Calcium boride (CaB6). Obtained by electrolysis of a mixture of calcium borate and calcium chloride; a dark crystalline powder. A powerful reducing agent used in metallurgy. (2) Aluminium boride. Obtained in electric furnaces; a crystalline mass. Used in the manufacture of glass. (3) Borides of titanium, zirconium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, molybdenum and tungsten are obtained by heating a mixture of the metal powder and pure boron powder in a vacuum at a temperature of 1800 – 2200 °C, or by treating the vaporised metal with boron. The reaction products are very hard and good conductors of electricity. They are used for obtaining hard sintered compositions. (4) Borides of magnesium, antimony, manganese and iron, etc. The heading excludes compounds of boron with the following elements: oxygen (heading 28 10), halogens (heading 28 12), sulphur (heading 28 13), precious metals (heading 28 43), phosphorus (heading 28 53), carbon (heading 28 49). For compounds with hydrogen, nitrogen or silicon, see Parts (A), (B), (D) above. The heading excludes copper-boron master alloys (see the Explanatory Note to heading 7405).

Notes

English text as published in Annex I to Regulation (EU) 2021/1832 (Combined Nomenclature). The EAEU tariff and the EU nomenclature copy these notes from the same convention. For a Russian declaration the binding version is the Russian one: Annex to Decision No 80 of the EEC Council of 14 September 2021.

1. Except where the context otherwise requires, the headings of this chapter apply only to:

(a) separate chemical elements and separate chemically defined compounds, whether or not containing impurities;

(b) the products mentioned in (a) above dissolved in water;

(c) the products mentioned in (a) above dissolved in other solvents provided that the solution constitutes a normal and necessary method of putting up these products adopted solely for reasons of safety or for transport and that the solvent does not render the product particularly suitable for specific use rather than for general use;
