2909 30 — Aromatic ethers and their halogenated, sulphonated, nitrated or nitrosated derivatives

Aromatic ethers and their halogenated, sulphonated, nitrated or nitrosated derivatives

Names come in English where the EU Combined Nomenclature publishes them — chapters, headings and subheadings, whose first six digits are the same Harmonized System; deeper EAEU detail is a machine translation, marked as such. Official texts — tariff notes, measures, lists and classification rulings — are the original: customs and your broker go by that wording. Where we show a machine translation of them, it is marked; where our quality check rejected one, the Russian stays.

(A) Ethers can be considered as alcohols or phenols in which the hydrogen atom of the hydroxyl group is replaced by a hydrocarbon radical (alkyl or aryl). They have the general formula (R-O-R1), where R and R1 can be the same or different.

33 These ethers are very stable, neutral substances. If the radicals concerned belong to the acyclic series, the ether is also acyclic; cyclic radicals give cyclic ethers. The first ether of the acyclic series is gaseous, the others are volatile liquids with a characteristic ethereal odour; the higher members of the series are liquids or sometimes solids. (I) Symmetrical acyclic ethers. (1) Diethyl ether (C2H5·OC2H5). A colourless, refractive liquid with a characteristic burnt odour; extremely volatile and highly flammable. Used as an anaesthetic and in organic synthesis. (2) Di(chloroethyl) ether, or dichlorodiethyl ether. (3) Diisopropyl ether. (4) Dibutyl ether. (5) Dipentyl ether (diamyl ether). (II) Asymmetrical acyclic ethers. (1) Ethyl methyl ether. (2) Ethyl isopropyl ether. (3) Butyl ethyl ethers. (4) Pentyl ethyl ethers. (III) Cyclanic, cyclenic or cycloterpenic ethers. (IV) Aromatic ethers. (1) Anisole (C6H5·OCH3) (methyl phenyl ether). A colourless liquid with a pleasant odour; used in organic synthesis (e.g., in the manufacture of synthetic perfumes), and also as a solvent and as a vermifuge (anthelmintic). (2) Phenetole (ethyl phenyl ether) (C6H5·OC2H5). (3) Diphenyl ether (C6H5·OC6H5). Colourless crystalline needles with an odour resembling that of geranium; used in perfumery. (4) 1,2-Diphenoxyethane (ethylene glycol diphenyl ether). (5) Anethole, contained in aniseed oil. Small crystals at temperatures below 20 °C; at higher temperatures a mobile liquid with a strong odour of aniseed oil. (6) Dibenzyl ether. (7) Nitrophenetoles, nitrated derivatives of phenetole. o-Nitrophenetole is a yellow oil. p-Nitrophenetole is a crystalline substance. (8) Nitroanisoles, nitrated derivatives of anisole. o-Nitroanisole is a liquid. m- and p-Nitroanisoles are crystals in the form of plates. Trinitroanisole is a very powerful explosive.

34 (9) 2-tert-Butyl-5-methyl-4,6-dinitroanisole (synthetic amber musk, or cresol musk), yellowish crystals combining the odours of ambrette seed oil and natural musk. (10) beta-Naphthyl methyl ether and beta-naphthyl ethyl ether (artificial neroli oil, or orange-flower oil). Colourless crystalline powders with an odour similar to that of orange oil. (11) Methyl ethers of m-cresol and of butyl-m-cresols. (12) Phenyl tolyl ether. (13) Ditolyl ether. (14) Benzyl ethyl ether. (B) ETHER-ALCOHOLS Ether-alcohols are derived from polyalcohols or phenol-alcohols by replacing the hydrogen of the phenolic hydroxyl group (in the case of phenol-alcohols) or of one of the alcoholic hydroxyl groups (in the case of polyalcohols) by an alkyl or aryl radical. (1) 2,2'-Oxydiethanol (diethylene glycol, diglycol). A colourless liquid; used in organic synthesis, as a solvent for gums and resins, in the preparation of explosives and plastics. (2) Monomethyl, monoethyl, monobutyl and other monoalkyl ethers of ethylene glycol or of diethylene glycol. (3) Monophenyl ethers of ethylene glycol or of diethylene glycol. (4) Anisyl alcohol. (5) Guaietolin (INN) (glycerol mono(2-ethoxyphenyl) ether); guaifenesin (INN) (glycerol mono(2-methoxyphenyl) ether). (C) ETHER-PHENOLS AND ETHER-ALCOHOL-PHENOLS These compounds are derived from diphenols or phenol-alcohols by replacing the hydrogen of the alcoholic hydroxyl group (in the case of phenol-alcohols) or of one of the phenolic hydroxyl groups (in the case of diphenols) by an alkyl or aryl radical. (1) Guaiacol, found in beechwood tar. The main constituent of wood creosote. Colourless crystals with a characteristic aromatic odour; after melting, guaiacol remains liquid. Used in medicine and in organic synthesis. (2) Sulfogaiacol (INN) (potassium guaiacolsulphonate), a finely divided powder, widely used in medicine. (3) Eugenol, obtained from cloves; a colourless liquid with an odour of cloves. (4) Isoeugenol, obtained synthetically from eugenol. A constituent of nutmeg essential oil. (5) Pyrocatechol monoethyl ether (guaethol), found in the wood oil of Swedish pine. Caustic, colourless crystals with an aromatic odour. (D) PEROXIDES OF ALCOHOLS, OF ETHERS AND OF KETONES These are compounds of the types ROOH, ROOR1, in which R and R1 are organic radicals. Examples are ethyl hydroperoxide and diethyl peroxide.

35 The heading also covers ketone peroxides (whether or not chemically defined), e.g., cyclohexanone peroxide (1-hydroperoxycyclohexyl 1-hydroxydicyclohexyl peroxide). The heading further covers halogenated, sulphonated, nitrated or nitrosated derivatives of ethers, ether-alcohols, ether-phenols, ether-alcohol-phenols, alcohol peroxides, ether peroxides or ketone peroxides, and complex derivatives (e.g., nitrosulphonated, sulphohalogenated, nitrohalogenated and nitrosulphohalogenated derivatives). The heading excludes peroxyketals (heading 2911).
