3503 00 80 — Isinglass; other glues of animal origin (excl. casein glues of heading 3501)

Isinglass; other glues of animal origin (excl. casein glues of heading 3501)

Names come in English where the EU Combined Nomenclature publishes them — chapters, headings and subheadings, whose first six digits are the same Harmonized System; deeper EAEU detail is a machine translation, marked as such. Official texts — tariff notes, measures, lists and classification rulings — are the original: customs and your broker go by that wording. Where we show a machine translation of them, it is marked; where our quality check rejected one, the Russian stays.

3503 Gelatin (including rectangular (including square) sheets, with or without surface treatment, colored or unpainted) and gelatin derivatives; fish glue; adhesives other than casein of heading 3501

The gelatin and glues of this heading are water-soluble protein substances obtained from hides, cartilage, bones, tendons or similar materials of animal origin, generally by treating them with warm water with or without the addition of acids. (A) Gelatin is less adhesive and better purified than glues; with water it forms a clear jelly. It is used in the preparation of foodstuffs, pharmaceutical products and photographic emulsions, for bacteria cultures and for clarifying beer and wines. It is also used for sizing paper or textiles, in the printing industry, in the preparation of plastics (hardened gelatin) and in the manufacture of articles. Gelatin is usually in the form of thin, transparent, almost colourless and odourless sheets which still bear the marks of the net on which it was dried, but it is also marketed in slabs, plates, sheets, flakes, powders, etc. Sheets of gelatin are covered by this heading provided they are in rectangular (including square) form, whether or not surface-worked or coloured (e.g., embossed, metallised, printed, other than gelatin postcards and other products printed as described in Chapter 49). If they are cut to shapes other than square or rectangular (e.g., in the shape of discs), they fall in heading 9602. Moulded or carved hardened gelatin also falls in heading 9602. (B) Gelatin derivatives include, inter alia, gelatin tannate and gelatin bromotannate. (C) Isinglass is obtained by the mechanical treatment of the swim bladders of certain fish, in particular sturgeon. It is presented in the solid state, usually in the form of semi-transparent thin sheets. It is used mainly as a clarifying agent for beer, wine or other alcoholic beverages and in pharmacy. (D) The other glues of animal origin covered by this heading are impure forms of gelatin which are used as glues. These glues may contain additives such as preservatives, pigments or viscosity-regulating agents. The principal glues are: (1) Bone glues, hide glues, nerve glues, tendon glues. These glues may vary in colour from yellow to brown, have a strong odour and are usually in the form of thicker, harder and more brittle sheets than crude gelatin. They may also be in the form of pearls, flakes, etc. (2) Fish glues (other than isinglass). These glues are obtained by treating fish waste (scales, cartilage, bones, fins, etc.) with hot water and are usually in the form of a gelatinous liquid.

This heading does not cover: (a) casein adhesives (heading 3501); (b) adhesives packaged for retail sale of a net weight not exceeding 1 kg (heading 3506); (c) gelatin-based copier pastes (heading 3824); (d) hardened gelatin (heading 3913).

Notes

English text as published in Annex I to Regulation (EU) 2021/1832 (Combined Nomenclature). The EAEU tariff and the EU nomenclature copy these notes from the same convention. For a Russian declaration the binding version is the Russian one: Annex to Decision No 80 of the EEC Council of 14 September 2021.

1. This chapter does not cover:

(a) yeasts (heading 2102);

(b) blood fractions (other than blood albumin not prepared for therapeutic or prophylactic uses), medicaments or other products of Chapter 30;

(c) enzymatic preparations for pre-tanning (heading 3202);

(d) enzymatic soaking or washing preparations and other products of Chapter 34;

(e) hardened proteins (heading 3913); or

(f) gelatin products of the printing industry (Chapter 49).

2. For the purposes of heading 3505, the term ‘dextrins’ means starch degradation products with a reducing sugar content, expressed as dextrose on the dry substance, not exceeding 10 %. Such products with a reducing sugar content exceeding 10 % fall in heading 1702.
