3806 30 — Ester gums

Ester gums

Names come in English where the EU Combined Nomenclature publishes them — chapters, headings and subheadings, whose first six digits are the same Harmonized System; deeper EAEU detail is a machine translation, marked as such. Official texts — tariff notes, measures, lists and classification rulings — are the original: customs and your broker go by that wording. Where we show a machine translation of them, it is marked; where our quality check rejected one, the Russian stays.

(A) ROSIN AND RESIN ACIDS Both rosin and resin acids are complex mixtures of abietic acid and its analogues with a small content of non-acidic components. They are solid substances, usually transparent and vitreous. Their colour may vary from pale yellow to dark brown depending on the impurities present. Rosin and resin acids are obtained by the following processes: (1) by separating the volatile terpenic products (turpentine and similar terpenic solvents) in the distillation of oleoresin obtained from the exudate of pine or other coniferous trees (pine resin, gum oleoresin, barras, etc.); (2) by extracting pine wood with solvents;

(3) by fractional distillation of thall oil, a by-product of the pulp and paper industry. Canifol and resinic acids are used in the production of certain varieties of soap, glued paper, in the manufacture of varnishes, polishing agents, mastics, ink, surguc binders for foundry rods, in the brewing industry, etc. and as raw materials for the production of derivatives and roniphole oils specified in paragraphs (B) - (D) below.

(B) Canifoli salts, resin acids or derivative canifols or resin acids other than canifoli adduct salts This category of salts of this group includes canifoli salts, resinic acids or canifol derivatives or resin acids, other than canifoli adduct salts. Sodium or potassium resinates are usually obtained by boiling crushed canifo li or resinic acids in a solution of sodium or potassium hydroxides. Other inorganic resinates are usually obtained by precipitating solutions of sodium or potassium resinates with a solution of metal salt (precipitated resinates) or by fusing a mixture of canifoli or resinic acids with metal oxide (melted resinates). Examples of such products are the resinates of aluminum, calcium, cobalt, copper, manganese, lead and zinc. Resinates are used to accelerate the drying of oils and are used in the production of varnishes or paints, as well as in the production of fungicides, disinfectants, etc. This also includes cured roanifol, which is obtained by treating canifoli or resinic acids, for example, calcium hydroxide (in a proportion of about 6%), which leads to curing and makes the product more suitable for the preparation of varnishes. This heading does not include: (a) precious metal resinates (heading 2843) and the resinates of headings 2844 to 2846; (b) resinate-based finished siccatives (heading 3211); (c) resin soaps obtained by saponification of mixtures of higher fatty acids and canifoli or resinic acids (heading 3401); and other resinate-based detergents (heading 3402).

(C) Complex resins Ester resins are prepared by esterification of canifols or resin acids or their oxidized, hydrogenated, disproportionate (dehydrated) or polymerized derivatives with ethylene glycol, glycerol or other polyalcohols. Essential resins are more plastic than natural resins, making them more suitable for mixing with pigments and other materials.

(D) OTHER (I) Derivatives of canifols and resinic acids. (1) Oxidized ronifol and resinic acids are usually obtained as a residual product of distillation of extracts of stumps of conifers planted for a long time in the ground, which leads to the natural oxidation of the resin acids contained in them. Canifol or resin acids can also be oxidized artificially. Oxidized rosin and resin acids are used for the manufacture of glues, emulsions, varnishes, paints, inks, for electrical insulation, etc.

(2) Hydrogenated ronifol and resin acids are prepared by treating canifoli or resin acids with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst. They are more resistant to oxidation than ordinary rosin and resinic acids, and discolor more slowly under the influence of light. They are used in the preparation of varnishes, soaps, etc. (3) Disproportionate (dehydrated) ronifol and resinic acids are obtained, for example, by heating canifoli or resinic acids to moderate temperature or at high temperature in the presence of an acid catalyst; catalysts can also be sulfur and selenium. Used to make varnishes, etc. (4) Polymerized canifol and resinic acids are obtained when processing cani foli or resinic acids with sulfuric acid and are used, in particular, for the manufacture of varnishes of high viscosity and stability. The degree of polymerization is very low. Polymerized canifol and resinic acids are usually mixtures of dimer and non-polymerized acids and may also be called dimerized canifol. (5) These include esters such as “resinates” or “abietates”, e.g. methyl, ethyl and benzyl esters, and “methyl hydroabietate”, which are used in particular as plasticizers for cellulosic varnishes. (6) Mixtures of dihydroabietyl, tetrahydroabietyl and dehydroabietyl alcohols (“abietyl alcohol”). (7) Adducts of canifoli and their derivatives. Canifol or resin acids modified with fumaric acid, maleic acid or anhydrides thereof are used in the preparation of alkyd resins, ronipholic glue and ink. These adducts can then be esterified with ethylene glycol, glycerol, or other polyalcohols. It also includes canifols such as salts with maleic and fumaric acids. (II) Canifol alcohol and canifol oils. These products are obtained from canifoli or resinic acids by distillation with superheated water vapor in the presence of a catalyst or by dry distillation. These products are mainly complex mixtures of hydrocarbons and may contain organic acids in amounts depending on distillation conditions. (1) Canifol alcohol, which is the most volatile fraction, is a movable liquid of straw color with a pungent odor, which is used as a solvent of resins, in the production of varnishes, paints, etc. (2) Canifol oils are more or less dense, have a different color and quality (golden oils, white, green or brown oils) and have a smoky smell. They are mainly used for the preparation of lubricants, cooling oils, printing paints, ointments, varnishes, paints, etc. This heading does not cover: (a) sulfonated canifol oils (heading 3402); (b) volatile components of the distillation of exudates of pine or other conifers (heading 3805); (c) roanifol peak (heading 3807). (III) Remelted resins.

Remelted resins are obtained from the exudates of ivica trees growing in tropical forests by a process called “resin distillation”, which involves heating exudates to enable them to dissolve in drying oils. The traditional source of such resins is digging.
