Names come in English where the EU Combined Nomenclature publishes them — chapters, headings and subheadings, whose first six digits are the same Harmonized System; deeper EAEU detail is a machine translation, marked as such. Official texts — tariff notes, measures, lists and classification rulings — are the original: customs and your broker go by that wording. Where we show a machine translation of them, it is marked; where our quality check rejected one, the Russian stays.

6909 Ceramic articles for laboratory, chemical or other technical purposes; ceramic gutters, vats and similar tanks used in agriculture; ceramic pots, vessels and similar articles used for the transport or packaging of goods (+): ceramic articles for laboratory, chemical or other technical purposes: 6909 11 – for porcelain

6909 12 – Articles having a hardness equivalent of 9 or more on the Mohs scale 6909 19 – other 6909 90 – other

This heading covers a very wide range of articles, generally made of vitrified ceramics (stoneware, porcelain, steatite ceramics, etc.), whether or not glazed. However, it does not cover lined refractory articles designed for thermal protection against high temperatures, described in the General Explanatory Note to Sub-Chapter I. But articles not designed to operate at high temperatures fall in this heading even if made of refractory materials (e.g., thread guides for textile machinery, grinding devices, etc., made of sintered alumina). The heading covers, in particular: (1) Laboratory ware and other articles (e.g., for research or industrial work), such as crucibles and crucible lids, evaporating dishes, combustion boats, cupels; mortars and pestles; acid spoons, spatulas; filter and catalyst supports; filter plates, tubes, candles, funnels, etc.; water-baths; measuring cylinders, graduated vessels (other than graduated kitchenware); laboratory dishes, cells, baths, mercury trays; small tubes (e.g., combustion tubes, including tubes for carbon, sulphur, etc., analysis). (2) Ceramic articles for other technical uses, such as parts of pumps, valves; retorts, vats, chemical baths and other stationary containers with single or double walls (e.g., for electroplating, for storing acids); stoppers for vessels containing acid; coils and columns for fractionating and distilling; Raschig rings for petroleum fractionating apparatus; grinding apparatus and balls, etc., for ball mills; thread guides for textile machinery and dies for extruding man-made textile filaments; plates, rods, tips and similar articles for tools. (3) Containers used for the commercial conveyance or packing of goods, e.g., large containers, carboys, etc., for transporting acids and other chemicals; large bottles with flattened sides, jars and pots for foodstuffs (jams, condiments, potted meats, alcoholic beverages, etc.), for pharmaceutical products or cosmetics (pomades, ointments, creams, etc.), for ink, etc. (4) Funnels, pipes and similar receptacles used in agriculture. The heading excludes: (a) articles of heading 6804; (b) retorts, crucibles, muffles, cupels and other similar articles of refractory materials (heading 6903); (c) kitchen or household containers (e.g., tea caddies, bread bins, biscuit barrels) (heading 6911 or 6912); (d) general-purpose vessels and containers for laboratories and display vessels for drugs, confectionery, etc. (heading 6914); (e) articles of cermets (heading 8113); (f) electrical apparatus (switches, cable boxes, fuses, etc.) of headings 8533 – 8538 and electrical insulators, insulating fittings, etc., of heading 8546 or 8547.

Explanation of the subheading. Subheading 6909 12 This subheading covers high performance ceramic products. These are products based on a crystalline ceramic matrix (for example, aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, zirconium oxide or silicon nitrides, boron or al-yuminium, or mixtures thereof); filamentous crystals or fibers of the hardening material (for example, metal or graphite) can be dispersed in order to obtain a composite ceramic material in the matrix. These products have a matrix with a very low porosity and fine-grained structure; they are characterized by high resistance to wear, corrosion, fatigue and thermal shock, strength at high temperatures; strength-weight ratios comparable to or exceeding a similar indicator for steel. They are often used in place of parts made of steel or other metals in mechanical devices that require small tolerances in size (for example, for rotors of turbochargers, rolling bearings and machine tools). The Mohs scale, referred to in this subheading, characterizes a material by its ability to scratch the surface of another material on a scale lower than the assessed material. Materials are ranked from 1 (for talc) to 10 (for diamond). Most high performance ceramic materials occupy the top of the scale. Silicon carbide and aluminum oxide, which are used in high performance ceramics, correspond to 9 or more on the Mohs scale. In order to distinguish between harder materials, Mohs' calu is sometimes expanded, with talc being taken as 1 and diamond as 15. On the extended Mohs scale, fused aluminum oxide has a hardness equivalent to 12, and silicon carbide is equivalent to 13.

1. This chapter includes only ceramic articles which have been fired after forming:

(a) headings 6904 to 6914 cover only those articles which are not covered in headings 6901 to 6903;

(b) articles heated to a temperature of less than 800 °C for the purpose of curing the resin, accelerating the hydration reaction or for the removal of water or other volatile components are not considered to have been burned. Such articles are excluded from Chapter 69; and

(c) ceramic articles obtained by firing inorganic non-metallic materials pre-prepared and molded, usually at room temperature. Raw materials include, inter alia, clays, silica materials including fused silica, high melting point materials such as oxides, carbides, nitrides, graphite or other forms of carbon, and in some cases binders such as refractory clays or phosphates.

2. This group does not include:

(a) the goods of heading 2844;

(b) articles of heading 6804;

(c) articles of Chapter 71 (for example, jewelry);

(d) the ceramics of heading 8113;

(e) articles of Chapter 82;

(f) electrical insulators (heading 8546) or fittings of insulating materials of heading 8547;

(g) artificial teeth (heading 9021);

(h) articles of Chapter 91 (e.g. watches not intended to be worn on or with oneself and their housings);

(ij) articles of Chapter 94 (e.g. furniture, fixtures and lighting equipment, prefabricated constructions);

(k) Articles of Chapter 95 (e.g. toys, games and sports equipment);

(l) articles of heading 9606 (e.g. buttons) or 9614 (e.g. pipes); or

(m) Articles of Chapter 97 (e.g. works of art).
