Names come in English where the EU Combined Nomenclature publishes them — chapters, headings and subheadings, whose first six digits are the same Harmonized System; deeper EAEU detail is a machine translation, marked as such. Official texts — tariff notes, measures, lists and classification rulings — are the original: customs and your broker go by that wording. Where we show a machine translation of them, it is marked; where our quality check rejected one, the Russian stays.

This heading covers: (I) Machines employing centrifugal force to separate substances in whole or in part by reason of their different densities, and machinery designed to remove moisture from wet materials. (ii) Units and equipment for filtering or purifying liquids or gases, other than, for example, filter funnels, milk filter nets, paint filter nets (usually Chapter 73). (I) CENTRAFUGES, INCLUDING CENTROPIGN DRIES Most of these units consist mainly of a perforated plate, drum, basket or chamber, etc., rotating with high frequency in a fixed housing, usually cylindrical. Centrifugal force presses the materials placed inside the drum against its walls. In some types of centrifuges, substances of different densities are collected at different levels using a series of dividing cones. In other types, the solids remain in the rotating perforated drum, basket, etc., and the liquid stains are removed. Devices of the latter type can also be used to impregnate materials with liquids (for example, during painting or cleaning). This heading covers (1) Centrifugal dryers for laundry, dyeing workshops, pulp and paper machines, mills, etc.

(2) Sugar-refining centrifuges. (3) Cream separators and centrifugal milk clarifiers. (4) Centrifuges for purifying oils, wines, spirits, etc. (5) Centrifuges for dewatering or dewaxing petroleum products. (6) Centrifuges for dehydrating wines, animal fats, starch, etc. (7) Centrifuges for the manufacture of nitrocellulose. (8) Separators for yeast cultures. (9) Centrifuges for the chemical industry (e.g., high-speed extractors for antibiotics). (10) Centrifuges used mainly in laboratories, in which the liquids separate into upper layers, enabling them to be decanted. (11) Centrifuges for separating plasma from blood. (12) Centrifuges for drying radioactive sludge. (13) Centrifugal honey extractors. PARTS Subject to the general provisions regarding the classification of parts (see the General Explanatory Note to Section XVI), parts of centrifuges are also classified in this heading (e.g., plates, bowls, baskets, chambers and casings). This heading excludes certain types of equipment in the operation of which centrifugal force is used, such as: (a) special centrifuges known as "gas" centrifuges, designed for the separation of uranium isotopes (heading 8401); (b) centrifugal pumps for liquids (heading 8413); (c) centrifugal air pumps and blowers (heading 8414); (d) centrifugal sifting machines for the milling industry (heading 8437); (e) centrifugal casting machines for metal (e.g., for cast iron pipes) (heading 8454) or for unset cement (e.g., for casting concrete pipes) (heading 8474); (f) centrifugal grinding machines (heading 8474); (g) spin dryers for the manufacture of semiconductor wafers (heading 8486). (II) FILTERING OR PURIFYING MACHINERY AND APPARATUS FOR LIQUIDS OR GASES Many kinds of filtering or purifying units of this heading are stationary appliances with no moving parts. This heading covers filters and purifiers of all types (physical or mechanical, chemical, magnetic, electromagnetic, electrostatic, etc.). The heading covers not only large industrial installations but also filters for internal combustion engines and for small domestic appliances. Nevertheless, this heading excludes filter funnels, milk strainers and vessels, tanks, etc., merely fitted with screens of metal or other material, as well as general-purpose vessels, tanks, etc., even if intended for use as filters after a layer of gravel, sand, charcoal, etc., has been placed in them.

In general, filtering units and equipment of this heading are divided into two types according to whether they are intended for liquid or gas. (A) Units, etc. for filtration and purification of liquids, including water softeners. Filters for cleaning liquids of this group separate solid, fat, colloidal and other particles from the liquid, for example, by passing it through a sheet, diaphragm or a mass of porous material (for example, fabric, felt, wire fabric, leather, ceramics, porcelain, kieselgur, sintered metal powders, asbestos, paper pulp, charcoal, soot, sand). When treating drinking water, some of these materials (e.g. porcelain and charcoal) remove bacteria, etc., during the filtration process; therefore, the filters made of them are sometimes called "water purifiers". Filters are also used to remove liquids from materials in the form of suspensions (for example, from ceramic materials or ore concentrates). This heading covers filters for the purification of fluids of gravitational, suction (or vacuum) or press types. This includes, inter alia: (1) Household water filters: Household press-type filters are designed for installation on main pipes or taps and usually consist of a cylindrical ceramic filter element enclosed in a metal housing. Gravitational filters are of the same type, but they are often large. This heading does not cover filters made mainly of ceramics or glass (Chapter 69 or 70, respectively). (2) Candle filters for the production of chemical textile materials . . These filters consist of a corrosion-resistant casing that houses a textile material element that filters the spinning solution. (3) Oil filters for internal combustion engines, machine tools, etc. There are two main types: (i) filters with a filter element from layers of felt, metal mesh, steel "wool", etc.; (ii) filters with permanent magnets or electromagnets to remove iron particles from the oil. (4) Boiler water filters. These filters are usually large vessels with several layers of filtering materials placed on top of each other. In addition to the intake and exhaust pipes, a system of tubes and valves is provided for cleaning the filter elements with a stream of water supplied in the transverse direction. (5) Filter presses. They consist of a horizontal series of filter chambers formed by easily removed vertical plates and frames coated with a filtering material (tissue, cellulose, etc.). Filter parts are connected by either a screw or a press mechanism. The liquid is pumped through the cells by a pump. Cameras can be heated from the inside by steam, etc. The filter is removed from the filter and the sediment is collected in the space between the plates. Filter presses are used to filter and purify many liquids (for example, in the chemical industry, in the sugar industry, in brewing, in wine production, in oil purification, in ore enrichment, in the production of ceramics, chemical threads, etc.).

(6) Rotating drum vacuum filters. These filters consist of a cylinder covered with a filter cloth or mesh. They are installed in tanks with liquid to be filtered. The liquid is sucked into the drum, and special mechanical devices remove solid sediment from the geripheral surfaces. (7) Intermittent vacuum filters: These filters consist of a series of "flips" or chambers, each coated with a filter cloth and connected to a common vacuum line. The filter is immersed in a tank of liquid, then a vacuum is created. (8) Chemical water purifiers, that is, permutite or zeolite softeners and lime water purifiers. (9) Electromagnetic water purifiers. In these devices, the action of a variable magnetic field does not allow calcium salts contained in water to crystallize and form a sediment on the walls of the pipes. Instead, the salts form a sludge that is easily removed. This heading also includes dialyzers, filters of a special type having a semi-permeable membrane through which the liquid passes by diffusion and is thus separated from colloidal particles. (B) Units, etc. for filtration or purification of gases. These gas filters and purifiers are designed to separate solid or liquid particles from gases or to isolate valuable products (for example, coal dust, metal particles, etc., extracted from the flue gases) or to remove harmful substances (for example, the release of dust, the removal of resins, etc. from gas calls or smokes, the removal of oils from steam engines). These include: (1) Filters and cleaners that use only mechanical or physical methods. In the first type, as in the case of liquid filters, the separation element has a porous surface or is a porous mass (feel, fabric, metal sponge, glass wool, etc.). In the second type, separation is provided by a sharp decrease in the speed of particles moving with the gas, which are then collected under the action of gravity, captured by the oil surface, etc. Filters of this type often have fans or use water jets. Filters of the first type include: (i) air filters for Oranium internal sg engines. They often combine both systems described above; (ii) bag filters. These filters consist of a series of bag-like fabric filter elements and are often provided with a shaking mechanism that causes the trapped particles to fall to the bottom of the bags; (iii) screen filters. These filters are an endless filter mesh moving on two rollers and stretched across the chamber through which the gases pass. The screen is cleaned by a scraper mechanism; (iv) rotating drum filters, such as in sandblasting installations. They usually consist of filter drums where sucked.

air. As the drum rotates, its surface is cleaned by a scraper which removes the deposit. Filters of the second type include: (v) dust collectors, smoke filters, etc., fitted with various baffle elements to reduce the velocity of the particles in the gas stream, e.g., deflectors, perforated partitions with staggered openings, circular or spiral paths with deflectors, and cones formed of superimposed baffle rings; (vi) cyclones, usually in the form of sheet-metal cones enclosed in a cylindrical casing. The gases are fed into the narrow part of the cone through a tangential pipe, and the velocity of the turbulent currents thus created decreases sharply as the gas approaches the wider part of the cone. As a result, the dust falls to the bottom of the container. (2) Electrostatic filters for air or other gases, in which the essential element is a series of vertical wires charged with static electricity. The dust contained in the air passes through the device, is attracted to the wires and remains on them. The dust is removed periodically. (3) Gas absorbers or absorption towers. These are used for purifying producer gas, coal gas, etc. They consist of tall metal columns containing coke or other packing materials. Water sprayers are fitted at the top. (4) Other chemical filters and purifiers for air or gases (including catalytic converters which transform the carbon monoxide contained in the exhaust gases of motor vehicles). This category also covers the following apparatus used in the nuclear industry: air filters specially designed for the extraction of radioactive dust (of the physical or electrostatic type); activated carbon purifiers for trapping radioactive iodine; ion-exchange apparatus for the separation of radioactive elements, including units operating by electrodialysis; separators for irradiated fuel or process effluents operating on the ion-exchange principle or chemical separators (using solvents, precipitation, etc.). PARTS Subject to the general provisions regarding the classification of parts (see the General Explanatory Note to Section XVI), the heading covers parts of the types of filters and purifiers described above. These include, inter alia: filtering elements for discontinuous vacuum filters; casings, frames and plates for filter presses; rotating drums for liquid and gas filters; deflectors and perforated plates for gas filters. It should be noted, however, that filter blocks of paper pulp fall in heading 4812 and that many other filtering elements (ceramics, fabrics, felt, etc.) are classified according to the material of which they are made. The heading also excludes: (a) gaseous diffusion apparatus for the separation of uranium isotopes (heading 8401);

(b) air conditioning installations of heading 8415 or air dryers of heading 8479; (c) presses for winemaking, cider production, etc. (heading 8435); (d) artificial kidney (dialysis) apparatus (heading 9018).
