9012 10 — Electron microscopes, proton microscopes and diffraction apparatus
Electron microscopes, proton microscopes and diffraction apparatus
Names come in English where the EU Combined Nomenclature publishes them — chapters, headings and subheadings, whose first six digits are the same Harmonized System; deeper EAEU detail is a machine translation, marked as such. Official texts — tariff notes, measures, lists and classification rulings — are the original: customs and your broker go by that wording. Where we show a machine translation of them, it is marked; where our quality check rejected one, the Russian stays.

9012 Microscopes other than optical microscopes; diffraction apparatus 9012 10 microscopes other than optical microscopes; diffraction apparatus 9012 90 parts and accessories
(A) Electron microscopes which differ from optical microscopes in that they use a beam of electrons instead of light rays. A conventional electron microscope is a device consisting of the following devices enclosed in a common enclosure as a unit: (1) A device (known as an electron gun) for emitting and accelerating electrons. (2) A system (which plays the role of an optical system of an ordinary microscope) consisting of electrostatic or electromagnetic "lenses" (which are, respectively, electrically charged plates or coils of current); they act as a capacitor, lens and projector. Usually there is also a so-called field.
lens between the lens and the projector, which serves to change the degree of magnification without affecting the scale of the scanned field. (3) The object table for the sample. (4) A vacuum pump assembly that maintains a vacuum in an electronic tube; these are sometimes self-housing units connected to the device. (5) Elements for visual observation on a fluorescent screen and for photographic image recording. (6) Stands and control panels containing elements controlling and regulating the electronic beam. This heading also includes scanning electron microscopes in which a very thin beam of electrons is successively directed to different points in the sample. Information is obtained by measuring, for example, the number of electrons transferred, the number of secondary electrons emitted, or the intensity of optical beams. The result can then be reproduced on a monitor screen, which can be incorporated into a microscope. Electron microscopes are widely used both in the field of pure science (biological or medical research, the structure of matter, etc.) and in industry (the study of smokes, dust, fibers of tissues, colloids, etc.; the study of the structure of metals, paper, etc.). (B) Proton microscopes. Instead of electrons, they use protons that have a wavelength 40 times smaller than electrons. Thus, a higher resolution is obtained, respectively, and this allows obtaining images with even greater magnification. The design and operation of a proton microscope do not differ significantly from the design and operation of an electron microscope; the electron gun is replaced by a proton gun, and hydrogen is used as the source. (C) Electronic diffraction devices. Using a beam of electrons aimed at the sample, they create diffraction patterns that are photographed. The dimensions, orientation and atomic structure of the crystals of the sample can be calculated from the diameter, intensity and contrast of the rings in the picture. This apparatus, used mainly for the study of corrosion, lubrication, catalysis, etc., does not differ in principle from the Electron Microscope and has the same essential elements (electron gun, electron-beam tube, electromagnetic coils, sample holder, etc.). Moreover, it should be noted that some electron microscopes can be equipped with a diffraction camera and therefore perform a dual function (visual observation and obtaining a diffraction pattern). Subject to the provisions of Notes 1 and 2 to this Chapter (see general provisions), parts and accessories suitable for use exclusively or principally with microscopes other than optical microscopes or diffraction apparatus also fall within this heading; examples are the frame and its constituent chambers and the sample table. This heading does not cover vacuum pumps (heading 8414), electrical equipment (batteries, rectifiers, etc.) (heading 85) and electrical measuring devices (voltmeters, milliammeters, etc.) (heading 9030).
