X-ray generators other than X-ray tubes, high tension generators, control panels and desks, screens, examination or treatment tables, chairs and the like, and general parts and accessories for apparatus of heading 9022, n.e.s.
Names come in English where the EU Combined Nomenclature publishes them — chapters, headings and subheadings, whose first six digits are the same Harmonized System; deeper EAEU detail is a machine translation, marked as such. Official texts — tariff notes, measures, lists and classification rulings — are the original: customs and your broker go by that wording. Where we show a machine translation of them, it is marked; where our quality check rejected one, the Russian stays.

(i) Equipment based on the use of X-ray radiation The main element of this apparatus is a unit containing a tube or tubes generating X-rays. This unit, which is usually suspended or installed on a stand or other support with a guide or lifting mechanism, is fed by an appropriate voltage from special equipment consisting of a set of
transformers, rectifiers, etc. In almost all other respects, the design characteristics of X-ray machines vary according to the uses for which they are designed, for example: (A) X-ray machines used for diagnostics. These include: (1) X-ray (fluoroscopic) devices. X-rays passed through the organ under study create a shadow on the screen; the change in the density of the shadow image represents the state of the organ. (2) X-ray machines . . . as they pass through the body under examination, the X-rays are captured and recorded on a photographic plate or film. The same devices can be used for radioscopy and radiography. (3) Apparatus consisting of an X-ray machine combined with a specially designed camera. They photograph an image that is created on an X-ray screen mounted in the camera itself. Provided that the apparatus and the specialized chamber are presented simultaneously, they shall relate (together) to this heading, even if they are separately packed for ease of transport. Separately presented cameras, however, fall in heading 9006. (B) Radiotherapy devices. Both the penetrating power of X-rays and their destructive effect on certain living tissues are used to treat many diseases, for example, some skin diseases and some tumors. This treatment is known as "surface" or "deep" depending on the depth reached by the rays. (C) X-ray machines for industrial use. X-rays have wide industrial applications. They are used, for example, in metallurgy to localize shells or to control the uniformity of alloys; in engineering to control the accuracy of assembly; in the electrical industry to control heavy cables or matte glass lamps; in the rubber industry to control the reactions of the internal bases of tires (for example, cord pulling); in various industries to control and measure the thickness of materials. Devices used for these purposes generally resemble those for diagnostic purposes described above, except that they may be provided with transition devices and auxiliary equipment for specific purposes. This heading also includes: (1) Special apparatuses (X-ray diffraction and X-ray spectrometry equipment) used to study the structure of crystals, as well as the chemical composition of the maters; X-rays are diffracted in crystals, and then fall on a photographic film or on an electronic counter. (2) Radioscopic examination of bank notes or other documents. (II) Alpha-, Beta- or Gamma-ray apparatus, beta-particles and gamma-quantas are emitted by radioactive elements which have the property of emitting radiation when atoms are spontaneously transformed. These are
radioactive elements are placed in a container, usually of steel covered with lead ("bomb"), which has a hole for transmitting radiation in only one direction. Gamma radiation can be used for the same purposes as X-rays. There are the following types of apparatus depending on the radiation used and the purpose of use: (1) Therapeutic apparatus in which the radioactive source is a charge of radium, radioactive cobalt or some other radioactive isotope. (2) Radiological devices used mainly in industry to control metal parts, etc., without destroying their structure. (3) Apparatus having a measuring instrument, such as a beta- or gamma-ray thickness gauge, for measuring the thickness of materials (sheets, gaskets, etc.), apparatus for monitoring the contents of packages containing a product (pharmaceutical products, food products, sports weapons cartridges, perfumes, etc.), or ionization anemometers. In these devices, the necessary information is usually obtained by measuring the change in the amount of radiation applied to the factor being studied. (4) Fire alarm devices containing smoke detectors containing a radioactive substance. This heading excludes instruments and apparatus which are not intended to contain a radioactive source and which merely measure or detect radiation, even if such instruments are calibrated in arbitrary units (heading 9030). (iii) X-ray tubes and other X-ray radiation generators, high-voltage generators, control shields and panels, screens, tables, chairs, and analogous devices for the investigation or treatment of these products: X-rays are converted into electrical energy. The characteristics of such tubes vary depending on the purpose of use. They consist essentially of a cathode that emits electrons, and a target (anticathode or anode) that absorbs these electrons, thus causing X-ray descent. In some cases, these tubes also have multiple intermediate electrodes to accelerate the flow of electrons. These electrodes are mounted in a tube or shell, usually of glass, with appropriate electrical contacts. The tube is often installed in an electrically insulated metal container filled with oil. Sometimes the tube is filled with gas, but more often it maintains a high degree of vacuum. This heading does not cover glass bulbs for X-ray tubes (heading 7011). (B) Other X-ray machines, such as those containing betatron, greatly accelerate the flow of electrons and thus create X-rays of a very large penetrating force. Betatrons and other electron accelerators which are not adapted for the production of X-rays and which are not incorporated into X-ray apparatus are excluded from this heading (heading 8543).
(C) X-ray screens. X-ray screens are fluorescent surfaces on which the radiation is received. The active surface usually consists of barium platinocyanide, cadmium sulphide and cadmium tungstate. They are often also covered with lead glass. Certain screens, known as intensifying screens, give an image consisting of actinic radiation which increases the density of the photographic image formed by the X-rays alone. (D) X-ray high tension generators. These generators contain a transformer and rectifying valves mounted inside an insulating shield; they also have detachable high-tension contacts for connection to the X-ray tube. It should be noted that this heading covers only those generators which are specialised for use with X-ray apparatus. (E) X-ray control panels and desks. These contain devices for controlling exposure time and voltage, and often also a dosimeter forming an integral part of the apparatus. It should be noted that this heading covers only panels and desks specialised for use with X-ray apparatus. (F) Examination or treatment tables, chairs and similar articles, specialised for X-ray work, whether designed for incorporation in X-ray apparatus or constituting separate articles. Provided they are designed for use solely or principally with X-ray apparatus, such tables, chairs, etc., are also classified in this heading even if presented separately; but tables, chairs, etc., not specialised for X-ray work are excluded (generally heading 9402). This heading also covers lightning conductors based on the principle of radioactivity. PARTS AND ACCESSORIES Subject to the provisions of Notes 1 and 2 to this Chapter (see the General Explanatory Note), parts and accessories identifiable as intended for use solely or principally with X-ray apparatus, etc., are also classified in this heading. Such parts and accessories include: (1) Applicators, usually with a receiving tube, for fitting at the outlet of an X-ray tube or of a radioactive "bomb"; they are sometimes called "localisers". (2) Centring devices with electric filament lamps, used particularly in radiotherapy for controlling the area treated by direct observation of the skin. Like the preceding accessories, these devices are usually fitted at the outlet aperture of the X-ray tube or "bomb". (3) Protective housings of lead glass or of other substances based on certain salts opaque to X-rays. These housings are placed around X-ray tubes to protect operators from harmful radiation. (4) Protective screens or shields, lead-coated or made of lead glass, for placing between the operator and the X-ray tubes. This heading does not, however, cover protective devices designed to be worn by the operator, such as overalls or gloves of leaded rubber (heading 4015) or protective spectacles of lead glass (heading 9004). This heading also excludes:
(a) radium needles and tubes, needles, etc., containing other radioactive materials (Chapter 28); (b) photographic plates and film (Chapter 37); (c) kenotrons and other rectifying tubes or valves used in power supply units for X-ray apparatus (heading 8540); (d) apparatus for examining X-ray photographs (including image projectors) (heading 9008 or 9010) and apparatus for developing radiographic or radio-photographic prints (heading 9010); (e) medical apparatus for the application of ultra-violet and infra-red rays (actinotherapy) (heading 9018); (f) instruments for measuring or detecting alpha, beta, gamma or X-ray radiation; these fall in heading 9030 unless incorporated in radiological apparatus. Subheading Explanatory Note. Subheading 9022 12 This subheading covers so-called whole-body computed tomography scanners. These are radiodiagnostic systems for complete examination of the body by means of electronic radiography of body layers (tomography). Areas of the body are scanned by X-rays in individual steps and layers, and the differing attenuation of the X-rays in the body is measured by hundreds of sensors arranged in rings around a tunnel in which the patient lies on a table. The system's own computer converts the data from the sensors into an image on the system monitor. The tomographic images are usually photographed by a special camera incorporated in the system and, if necessary, they are shielded from electromagnetic radiation.
