Names come in English where the EU Combined Nomenclature publishes them — chapters, headings and subheadings, whose first six digits are the same Harmonized System; deeper EAEU detail is a machine translation, marked as such. Official texts — tariff notes, measures, lists and classification rulings — are the original: customs and your broker go by that wording. Where we show a machine translation of them, it is marked; where our quality check rejected one, the Russian stays.

Certain combined instruments can, by means of control pedals, be made to act alternately as electric cutters or electro-coagulators. (8) Actinotherapy apparatus. This uses radiations lying within, but more often outside, the visible spectrum (infra-red, ultra-violet) for treating certain diseases or for diagnostic purposes (special lighting for detecting skin diseases). This apparatus usually incorporates lamps, although infra-red apparatus may be fitted with heating resistors or heated panels with reflectors.

(9) Incubators for babies. These consist essentially of a transparent plastic compartment, electrical heating equipment, safety and alarm devices and apparatus for air filtration, oxygen supply and regulation. In most cases they are mounted on a trolley and incorporate baby scales. Housings containing electrodes or other devices intended for use with the apparatus described above also fall in this category. This heading also excludes prenatal listening apparatus for non-medical use of heading 8518 (see the Explanatory Note to that heading). PARTS AND ACCESSORIES Subject to the provisions of Notes 1 and 2 to this Chapter (see the General Explanatory Note), parts and accessories of apparatus or appliances of this heading are also classified in this heading. Subheading Explanatory Notes. Subheading 9018 12 This subheading covers ultrasonic scanning electro-diagnostic apparatus. This apparatus operates by using high-frequency sound waves emitted into the human body through a transducer. The transducer is placed in direct contact with the body and alternately emits short pulses of ultrasound and "listens" for their echoes; the characteristics are interpreted to obtain information on the location, size, shape and structure of tissues. Interpretation is usually carried out by a computer with an output device displaying a video image of the organs. This method of body scanning is used for examining the foetus in pregnant women. It is also frequently used for examining the breast, heart, liver and gall bladder. Subheading 9018 13 Magnetic resonance imaging is based on the principle of alignment of the nuclei of hydrogen atoms in strong magnetic fields. If a high-frequency signal is then directed at these atoms, their alignment is disturbed. When the radio waves are switched off, the atoms realign, emitting a weak electrical signal in the process of realignment. Since the human body consists largely of hydrogen atoms, an image of virtually any region of the body can be obtained by means of the returned pulses. Since hydrogen is a constituent of water, the returned pulses can be used to distinguish between tissues. This makes it possible to obtain images of bone marrow and soft tissues. The magnetic resonance imaging electro-diagnostic apparatus of this subheading consists of a giant electromagnet, a high-frequency generator and a computer for processing. It must be installed in a room completely shielded from external electromagnetic fields. To obtain a highly efficient magnetic field of the required strength, electromagnets cooled to extremely low temperatures by liquid helium are necessary. Hydrogen was chosen as the basis for magnetic resonance imaging because of its abundance in the human body and its known magnetic characteristics. The use of other elements, such as sodium or phosphorus, is also possible. Subheading 9018 14

The electro-diagnostic apparatus of this subheading is used to obtain an image by irradiating the human body with gamma rays. This image is produced by appropriate apparatus, such as a scintigraphic scanner and, best of all, a gamma camera. These nuclear scanners require the patient to be given, orally or by injection, a radioactive compound (tracer) which is rapidly absorbed by the organ under study. The body is then scanned by a gamma counter which records the amount of radiation emitted by the tracer that has penetrated the organ in question (e.g., the brain), in order to determine where the isotope has been absorbed. A video image is produced by computer analysis of the recorded radiation. This image consists of a set of light and dark areas or contrasting coloured spots and shows where in the organ the radioisotope has been absorbed. Such scanning makes it possible to obtain information on the structure and function of the organ being examined. An example of scintigraphic apparatus is the positron emission tomograph (PET). It combines the principle of nuclear medicine with the technology used in computed tomography (see the Explanatory Note to subheading 9022 12).
