9201 10 — Upright pianos

Upright pianos

Names come in English where the EU Combined Nomenclature publishes them — chapters, headings and subheadings, whose first six digits are the same Harmonized System; deeper EAEU detail is a machine translation, marked as such. Official texts — tariff notes, measures, lists and classification rulings — are the original: customs and your broker go by that wording. Where we show a machine translation of them, it is marked; where our quality check rejected one, the Russian stays.

Explanatory notes to heading 9201 2 paragraphs

Machine translation from Russian. The original is the EEC explanatory note, and that is what a classification dispute is argued from; the translation is for understanding and has no legal force.

9201 Piano, including automatic; harpsichords and other keystring instruments (+): 9201 10 – piano 9201 20 – piano 9201 90 – other

This heading covers (1) pianos with keyboards and strings struck by hammers, whether or not equipped with an electric pickup and amplifier, i.e.: (a) pianos having a deck on which the strings are vertically mounted, the bass strings being placed across the rest; (b) pianos (concert and cabinet) having strings mounted horizontally in an elongated body. This category of goods includes automatic pianos, whether or not containing a keyboard, played, for example, with perforated rollers of paper or cardboard; they may have a mechanical, pneumatic or electric drive. However, "electronic pianos" and electronic musical instruments which may be mounted on the piano to produce the sound of other instruments while playing the piano are classified in heading 9207 (see general provisions for this chapter). (2) Harpsichords and other keystring instruments such as spinets and clavichords. Explanation of subheadings. Subheadings 9201 10 and 9201 20 These subheadings also cover automatic pianos.
